Welcome to “A Tale of Capricorn”, a science fiction play-by-post role-playing game set in a futuristic universe where Humanity has expanded beyond the gulf between the stars to boldly explore strange new worlds and seek out new life.
But what is a play-by-post role-playing game? Well, the answer is simple: it is a genre of online role-play which uses text in the form of post as a mean to operate in a predefined fictional universe. For a more detailed explanation check wikipedia and a more satirical interpretation check TvTropes.
Our fictional universe:
"A Tale of Capricorn" is set in the middle of the 26th century, a time well past the period of Humanity’s ultimate political union on planet Earth, now universally called Terra, and its initial expansion outside the Solar System. In the centuries between our own time at the dawn of the 21st century and the setting of “A Tale of Capricorn” Humanity has colonised the Solar System, sent sleeper and generation ships beyond the frontiers of Known Space, fought itself in a Third World War, achieved a peaceful global government, developed faster-than-light travel, founded an extensive domain over hundreds of Star Systems, was plagued by a disease from outside its comprehension, found itself on the brink of collapse and has already passed the critical stages of recovery and restoration.
An encyclopaedia entry trying to define the setting would put it at a “post-post-apocalyptic science-fiction universe”, but the academics decide on their own accord and in due time.
Our idea with "A Tale of Capricorn" is to enable for immersive role-play within two distinct regions of Human Controlled Space, with a clear emphasis on the the second region:
1) The Solar System where the oldest and most populated worlds of Humanity such as Terra and Mars can be found. This is a place of political struggle and corporate power manoeuvring at the galactic level as well as financial manipulation aplenty.
2) The Capricorn Expanse, a region of space still being explored and colonised. This is a place to start anew or just make a start. Rule of Law is not normalised and opportunities for smugglers, pirates and likewise space scum abound. New Star Systems are being discovered and explored and there are whole planets, asteroids and other celestial bodies to claim, plunder or use in whatever ways an avid and intrepid adventurer might see fit.
